Facing the Coastal Crisis: SustainaBlue, Blue Environmental Awareness Training

Indonesia’s coastal regions are facing an escalating environmental crisis. Yet amidst these growing challenges, youth are stepping up with hope and determination. As part of their commitment to environmental education and advocacy, Sustainablue, in collaboration with The 14th Universitas Indonesia Youth Environmental Action (UI YEA), organized a short but impactful training session titled “Coastal Environmental Crisis: Threats and Hopes” on Monday, July 28, 2025.

Held at the Pusat Kegiatan Mahasiswa (Pusgiwa) UI Auditorium, the event gathered 40 youth participants from UI YEA, all with a strong passion for environmental issues and sustainable action.
The highlight of the session was a keynote lecture by Mufti Petala Patria, Project Coordinator of SustainaBlue in UI and a prominent expert in marine and coastal studies. In his insightful presentation, Mufti discussed the current state of Indonesia’s coastal ecosystems, particularly in marginalized and vulnerable regions.

He outlined several urgent threats, ranging from the climate crisis, natural disasters, and waste pollution, economics problem, to severe coastal erosion, that endanger both natural habitats and the livelihoods of coastal communities.

Importantly, Mufti introduced the principles of Environmental Justice and blue economy as key frameworks for managing vulnerable coastal areas. Using Banyuasih Village in Pandeglang, Banten as a case study, he emphasized the need for inclusive, community-driven approaches in coastal management, especially in areas where residents depend heavily on marine resources.

This training session provided both knowledge and inspiration for the young participants. It deepened their understanding of the complex issues facing Indonesia’s coastlines and encouraged them to become active contributors in building a more equitable and sustainable blue future.
